On Feeding Pigeons

Letters & Essays

I used to think people fed pigeons out of kindness, that it came from that portion of the human heart that longs to help, to serve, and even to protect.

“I’ve never had any desire to become a writer, no lifelong passion to write that finds its origin in a hated childhood or in a love for words. I stumbled upon it the same way a scientist stumbles upon a cure.”

As a grown man, I'm trying not to be so damn demanding. _________________________________ #booknerdigans #bookreview #thechristroystories #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks #bookgeek #bookgeeks #currentlyreading #epicreads #bookblogger #bookbloggers #instaread #instareads #instareader #instareaders #totalbooknerd #booktour #readinglist #goodreads #humansofbookstagram #ilovebooks #librarylife #readmorebooks #readingtime #irony #quotegram #italy #quotefortheday
Instagram post 2195363868399354856_5488194165 The Hemingway quote is from one of his last and often overlooked books, The Garden of Eden. I’m reading it these days, and is not like any of his other books. There’s no big-game hunting or deep sea fishing or any of the other blood sports we’ve come to associate with this writer. And although it takes place in France and is about a young writer, you would find it hard to recognize Ernest Hemingway in the protagonist. In fact, it is one of the most experimental novels ever written by the man known as Papa, and touches upon themes that you would never expect Hemingway to broach like, for example, androgyny. The book was published posthumously in 1986 and some believe his last son, Gregory, who was known to be a cross-dresser, wrote parts of the book in an attempt to get back at his father for I can only imagine what. Now, I don’t know if any of that is true, but the mystery around the book certainly made me want to read it with a discerning eye. So I’ll be spending the week sharing my thoughts on The Garden of Eden, and Ernest Hemingway more generally. _________________________________ Does anyone still read Hemingway? _________________________________ #booknerdigans #bookreview #thechristroystories #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks #ernesthemingway #bookgeek #bookgeeks #currentlyreading #epicreads #bookblogger #bookbloggers #instaread #instareads #instareader #instareaders #totalbooknerd #hemingway #booktour #readinglist #goodreads #humansofbookstagram #ilovebooks #librarylife #hemingwayquotes #whatimcurrentlyreading #readmorebooks #readingtime
Instagram post 2194448994655642049_5488194165 Letters I enjoy writing letters, almost as much as I enjoy receiving them. I start on plain white sheets of unruled paper, or on hotel stationary from a hotel worthy of receiving a letter from. (I often write letters when traveling.) I always date my letters because I want the person to know the day I sat down and composed a letter in their name. This way it becomes a mediation, a sort of personal holiday that we share and can celebrate—at least that’s how I see it.
I use my favorite pen. These days my favorite pen is a fountain pen my wife bought me before she became my wife. Nothing too fancy, but certainly beautiful in its design. I only write in blue ink. I’m not sure why. I always start with the most simple of salutations, no matter how heavy the message is to follow.
